BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 8, 2008) – A three-run fifth and a five-run sixth gave the LeMoyne College Dolphins all the offense they would need, as senior pitchers Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y.) and Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y.) combined to allow only one run on three hits, and the Dolphins won by a 9-1 count over the Bulldogs of Bryant University in a 6-inning game shortened by the mercy rule in game seven of the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
The win improves LeMoyne to 42-8, while Bryant falls to 30-15 with the loss.
LeMoyne took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y.) led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on senior first baseman Emma Murphy’s (East Syracuse, N.Y.) single through the left side.
Bryant came right back with a run in the top of the second, as senior first baseman Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, N.Y.) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Stephanie Mirando’s (North Haven, N.Y.) double to right field.
The game remained 1-1 until the LeMoyne fifth, as Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y.) roped a two-out single to right field. Reed followed with a double to left field, and with runners on second and third, Caitlin O’Neill (Pittsford, N.Y.) doubled to right center, pushing the score to 3-1 in favor of LeMoyne. A hit batsman and a single to left field drove in another run.
The LeMoyne sixth saw the Dolphins push five more runs across, courtesy of five hits and four Bryant errors in the inning. VanGorder, O’Neil and Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y.) each had RBI hits in the inning.
Bryant will take on New Haven, a 2-0 winner over Georgian Court, tomorrow, May 9, at 8:45 a.m.
LeMoyne advances to the winners bracket final against C.W. Post, a 2-0 winner over Caldwell, scheduled for tomorrow, May 9, at 2 p.m.
