BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2009) – Bridgeport used timely hitting and batted 6-for-13 as a team with runners in scoring position as they shutout the baseball team, 7-0 on Monday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
The Pioneers fall to 12-28 overall and 9-10 in the conference, while Bridgeport improves to 11-16 and 9-12 in ECC play.
A four-run first inning saw Cody Quinn score on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. Luke Abraham’s RBI single to center accounted for another run, and Mike Ferrara and Christ Barile also added RBI singles to push the lead to 4-0.
C.W. Post loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth but Bobby Swann got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat and keep the Pioneers scoreless.
Another run in the fifth courtesy of a leadoff double from Kevin Clements, who came around to score on Ferrara’s single to left field, pushed the lead to 5-0, and another two runs in the sixth put the game out of reach for C.W. Post, who found themselves looking at a 7-0 deficit.
Swann shut out the Pioneers allowing seven hits and striking out ten. Freshman pitcher Mike Behar (Staten Island, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings. Dan Walsh (Newfield, N.Y.) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out four and walking none.
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) each had two hits for C.W. Post.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow, April 28, as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas for a 3 p.m. game.
