The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University Department of Athletics announced Friday that the men’s and women’s track and field teams will no longer be offered as varsity programs, effective in the upcoming 2007-08 academic year.

C.W. Post senior Junaid Hamin-Gilliam (Freeport, N.Y.) rounded out his final outdoor track and field season in grand style Thursday afternoon at Johnson C. Smith University, as he placed ninth in the long jump with his leap of 23-03.25 at the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently announced its regional coaches of the year in Division II, and C.W. Post assistant coach Val Holt has been recognized as the coach of the year on the women's side in the Northeast Region.

Post junior Maria Michta will get another opportunity to compete for the United States at next month's Pan American Race Walk Cup in Brazil, as the standout placed fifth Saturday afternoon at the USA Team Trials in the 20-kilometer race walk. She'll be joined at the Pan Am race by Pioneers alumna, Loretta Schuellein, who placed fourth in the trials.

The C.W. Post indoor track and field teams had a trophy-winning weekend in the Nutmeg State, as the Pioneers competed for the Collegiate Track Conference, and the inaugural East Coast Conference, championships. Both teams won ECC titles, while the men's contingent won its third consecutive CTC indoor crown. The women's squad placed third in the CTC meet. Post indoor track and field teams competed Friday night in the Metropolitan Conference Championships at the 168th Street Armory. The men's contingent placed ninth in the meet, while the women's squad checked in with a 13th-place showing.
